May 1 – Know Limits Teen Challenge Health Fair
May 10, 2010
With May 1, 2010 came the Know Limits Teen Challenge Fair at the Hemet Valley Mall. It was a day of great fun and the much awaited Teen Star Search finally culminated in winners. Checkers and Stripes won the Band category, giving a charming rendition of a couple of Beatle songs. This five girl band charmed the judges and the audience with lots of interaction with the crowd, and a comfortable relaxed attitude that showed their confidence in their instruments, vocals and a great working relationship with each other.

Leomi Tran won the Solo Performer category singing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. The audience was hushed listening to her hitting all the high notes perfectly. Forever 21 outfitted both winners and many of the other contestants with their chic and colorful outfits. It was great seeing and hearing the Star Search performers again. Both Forever 21 and Sears donated gift certificates and the mall itself donated cash prizes for the winners. All 21 contestants came away with gifts and prizes that day.
The two other competing bands were Fiar and Chicken Wing, both metal bands. The crowd was filled with their great following. Fans and relatives filled the seats and crowded around the performance area swaying to the beat and singing along.
“No Color Lines” a talented hip hop dance group performed twice. They had 30 dancers wearing comfortable t-shirts and shorts, dancing over the dance floor installed next to the rock wall. Their choreography was both smooth and quirky but always fun to watch.
Inside the mall were 25 tables manned by non-profit organizations that catered to teens’ health needs. One of the most popular was manned by Marinello’s School of Beauty where several cosmetologists were giving free make-up makeovers and manicures. There was a scavenger hunt to get qualifying raffle entries, and the raffle prizes were donated by local businesses. Six donated guitars were the most sought after.
The Police Explorers were very much in evidence, with a squad car on display at the mall’s main entrance, right across from the U. S. Army’s recruitment table. The Explorers walked around both watching the festivities and answering questions.
It was a fun day, with lots to do both inside and outside the mall.
